The only way to avoid pain from gardening or sitting is to avoid rounding your back and not to stay in one position for too long. Make sure you are constantly moving and changing position so that your body doesn’t have a chance to adapt to the position that you are in. When sitting try to do so with your knees lower than your hips. This forces the pelvis more upright and it will make it a lot easier to avoid rounding the lower back.
