Committee members should have the option to review your thesis or dissertation in paper format or as a PDF document. A PDF file created in Adobe Acrobat allows viewers to mark up the file and add notes that can be sent back electronically to the author. The choice is strictly up to the committee members. The review by the committee takes place BEFORE you submit your ETD. However, there are advantages to reviewing the document electronically. For example, a committee member could review your work online from a distant location.

When an electronic dissertation is approved by the Graduate School and it becomes publicly available, an email is automatically generated notifying . The ETD author must have also submitted the UMI/ProQuest form(s) and paid the appropriate fees.

A primary goal of ETD initiatives is to make the research and scholarship conducted by graduate students freely and openly accessible. Another goal is to give future academics opportunities to prepare electronic works such as book chapters, journal articles, and conference presentations, assuming that they will be publishing electronically in the future also. Yet another goal is to expand the medium of expression for graduate research and scholarship to more than words and figures that can be reproduced on paper, to including audio and video. Electronic Theses & Dissertations

The Electronic Theses and Dissertations (ETD) database submission program is a joint effort between the Graduate School and the University of Miami Libraries. Theses and dissertations are stored in electronic form in the digital archive and are made available online for worldwide retrieval. All graduating doctoral and most master's students with a thesis requirement at UM are required to submit an electronic copy of their dissertation for inclusion in the ETD database.
